"I'm going to find his weakness..." [Sep. 29th, 2008|10:47 pm]
"...And then I'm going to kill him."

Season 3 of Heroes has begun. The two hour premiere was good -- no doubts. I do feel like it was a little rushed. Obviously, the writers and producers felt last season had too slow a start. And I agree that too much build up can be bad, especially if the reveal doesn't live up to it but I feel like maybe they went a little overboard in the other direction.

I'm not sure they had to hit us with quite so much 'BAH-BLAM!'.

Overall I'm happy with the way the first three episodes are going and this seasons apparent arcs. I kind of am non-plussed about the Mohinder arc but only cause I was definitely planning on using that arc in a game of mine at some point. Ah well.

More Heroes thoughts behind the cut )

In an unrelated note I went to the Shards of Alara Pre-Release at the DW and had a rather good time. Going 3-0-1 helped (even if the prize support was thin) Will probably play a limited bit of limited. We'll see.

"What am I thinking now Parkman...." [Sep. 9th, 2008|11:26 pm]
..."Your /last/ thought."

I finally finished watching Season 2 of Heroes recently (the second half of the season which I missed), which meant of course I had to watch all of Season 1 again and then Season 2 again from the beginning. While I haven't made it all the way S2 the second time I can say I, like many others, do adore this series.

The short list of why behind the cut:

Heroes Love )

Anyone familiar with comicdom will see the many influences they clearly pulled from (Days of Future Past and Watchmen, come to mind) however they still weave their own story that pays homage to these sources without diminishing them. Heroes strengthens the case for serial television series in the marketriod's tiny brains (marketroid love of episodic over serial killed great series like Firefly) which may be as great a contribution as its excellent storytelling in the long run.

There are many reasons to like Angelina Jolie... [Aug. 23rd, 2008|03:43 pm]
... this is however the best in recent memory.

http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/thedishrag/2008/08/hollywood-heavy.html

I watched a Biography interview with her in 2002 I believe it was, and I was utterly and completely impressed with her as a person. Since then the various media blitz that has surrounded her has, admittedly, dulled that view (probably unfairly).

This however reminds me of my impression of the person before that celeb-deification happened. Someone who has a very well thought out set of ideals that she forms her basis of beliefs and constitutes her actions on. Unlike so many other celebrities that try to throw around the weight of their influence on the whim of their feelings.

Color me impressed ... again.

Thomas Wayne's Wisdom... [Aug. 18th, 2008|10:12 pm]
"Why do we fall, Bruce? So we can learn to pick ourselves back up..."

I've been doing a lot of introspection recently, and I definitely feel like I've 'fallen' in more than one way. The good news is I feel like I've been picking myself up in most of those ways.

I haven't in all though. And one of the worst falls has been me breaking my promise to myself to write. The wheres, whys, and hows of my not writing the last what... almost two years don't really matter now. What does matter is that I pick myself up and start writing again.

Because I believe in story. I believe it has value -- a very deep, instrinsic value that we need. And I think I have stories to tell. So its time to renew the promise the write.

I've taken some notes on Fires of Heaven and GC recently. We'll see where they go.

I don't plan on falling again...

I have been nudged to post, so shall I.

Bad news is it probably won't actually be 'content'. I've started a first person (Allister's perspective) update to Fires of Heaven that is supposed to cover the FtF sessions up to this point, but its not done so no posting it. I've also bounced between scripting the Battle of Dunstan's Region for GC, and done probably three sessions worth of scripting (and I'm still missing some stuff) for the next Fires game, whenever people actually free up for that.

I'm back in black; Exo took me back and so far my new trial period is going well. There is something to be said for raiding with people that get shit done. Spending three hours instead of three days clearing an instance makes me feel like I can play the game and still do life type things I know I need to. Hopefully I'll make it to full member in a couple weeks.

Additional Random Thoughts:

Blade Trinity is not a good movie. Or rather, its terribly mediocre with very little that shines. Save Jessica Biel. For the first time since the Matrix I saw a female action star and believed she could, in fact, kick the ass that she was kicking onscreen. She toned up quite a bit, which in and of itself is a great thing to see in our current anorexic Hollywood but more importantly her body kinetics were right; she moved in a way that seemed like, well that she could lay real smack down. So because of this I am not actually disappointed I bought this movie.

The english translation and official US release of Final Fantasy: Advent children is generally cleaner and many of the lines are more understandable, but it also seemed to be severely off on several of Cloud and Tifa's more notable lines. This makes me sad. Additionally whoever casted Tifa's voice actress needs to be drug out into the street and shot.

Batman Begins is still the best movie I've seen in the last five years. It moves me in ways that few movies have.

I need to see United93. I have failed in my patriotic duty in not seeing it yet.

I am dead serious.

Dave Grohl is IMO possibly the most significant musical aritist of the last twenty years. The consistency of the quality of work he has been involved in is simply astounding. This comes to mind mainly because of a Foo Fighters song that has been sticking with me recently. And in fact, why not, I'm going to pull something out I haven't in about a decade.

Song lyrics follow:

I've got another confession to make
I'm your fool
Everyone's got their chains to break
Holdin' you

Were you born to resist or be abused?
Is someone getting the best, the best, the best, the best of you?
Is someone getting the best, the best, the best, the best of you?

Are you gone and onto someone new?
I needed somewhere to hang my head
Without your noose
You gave me something that I didn't have
But had no use
I was too weak to give in
Too strong to lose
My heart is under arrest again
But I break loose
My head is giving me life or death
But I can't choose
I swear I'll never give in
I refuse

Is someone getting the best, the best, the best, the best of you?
Is someone getting the best, the best, the best, the best of you?
Has someone taken your faith?
Its real, the pain you feel
You trust, you must
Confess
Is someone getting the best, the best, the best, the best of you?
Oh...

Oh...Oh...Oh...Oh...

Has someone taken your faith?
Its real, the pain you feel
The life, the love
You die to heal
The hope that starts
The broken hearts
You trust, you must
Confess

Is someone getting the best, the best, the best, the best of you?
Is someone getting the best, the best, the best, the best of you?

I've got another confession my friend
I'm no fool
I'm getting tired of starting again
Somewhere new

Were you born to resist or be abused?
I swear I'll never give in
I refuse

Is someone getting the best, the best, the best, the best of you?
Is someone getting the best, the best, the best, the best of you?
Has someone taken your faith?
Its real, the pain you feel
You trust, you must
Confess
Is someone getting the best, the best, the best, the best of you?

Over a month since a post, and even that one was filler. I've been slacking, so clearly I need to try and turn things up a notch. Hopefully ftf RPing won't get in the way of my attempts to get myself writing again in some fashion.

Truth is I've been going through quite a few mood swings the last couple weeks. Balancing various time commitments may be a challenge as well. Especially with the weather getting better, I don't have an excuse not to run. So that's a little more time shaved out of the schedule. The key really is to keep things as challenges, find the plan, execute and move on without letting shit get blown out of proportion by myself or others around me.

Bottom line though, is that I set a goal to write and haven't been meeting it so I need to correct that. So by this time next week, I'll add something here.

Basically I just have to cowboy the fuck up, take care of my shit, do the things I know I should be, avoid justification and indulgence and I think shit will work itself out.
